February Update
The Vipers had a busy month with lots of tournament play, and play-in games for the State Tournament!
Tournament play for the month of February:
U12 Major-2 White: Waterville Valley Tournament
The team competed in the Waterville Valley Tournament this weekend and went undefeated winning the Championship. The team was able to truly work on the concepts that have been taught throughout the season and put them into action. We had some very nice passing plays with great overall positioning. The girls had a great time playing hockey, snow tubing, and hanging out. We look forward to our playdown game next weekend!
U13-2 White: Waterville Valley Tournament
The U13-2 White team traveled to Waterville in hopes of capturing the Waterville Valley Deep Freeze crown. They were able to do so with strong play in all 3 facets of the game while putting up 14 goals and only allowing 1 throughout the tournament. The Vipers started hot in game 1 scoring all 3 of their goals in the first period of a 3-0 shutout win against The Maine Evolution. Game 2 versus Nantucket proved to be more of the same, as the Vipers notched their second win of the tournament with a 4-0 shutout win. With the record of 2-0, the Vipers found themselves moving straight to the championship game against their opponent from Friday night, The Maine Evolution. This time the Vipers proved to be much more than The Evolution could handle in a total team effort. They dominated Maine in a 7-1 win to take home the championship trophy! Great work girls!!
State Tournament play-down games:
U12-1 Red: The U12-1 team hosted the Lady Flames for their State playdown game on 2/9. The team that wins in a state playdown game moves on to states, so the Vipers knew this game was a must-win. The girls came out strong and were all over the puck. The forecheck was perfect and the D zone was flawless, with players picking up sticks and bodies. The Lady Flames got lucky with a wrap-around goal in the first period. Vipers fought back hard and Brooke Barton was able to find the back of the net with 50 seconds left in the second period. The game was tied 1-1 and neither team scored during the third period. Both teams had many shots on net but the goalies played outstandingly. The game went into a sudden death overtime period and the Vipers knew that they needed to come out strong. The first shift into OT the Vipers had the puck in the Flames’ end. The line of Brooke Barton, Melania DiVirgilio, and Scarlett Hollien were controlling the puck and cycling behind the net. The defensive pair of Makenzie Dunnett and Rylan Blake were on point with keeping the puck in the Flames’ zone. Melania DiVirgilio gave a nice behind-the-net pass to Scarlett Hollien and Hollien saw Barton high in the slot wide open and hit her. Barton took a laser of a shot (blocker side high) and scored the OT goal! Great all-around game for every single player on the team. The team competed hard all game long and played together and for each other. Congrats to them and good luck at States girls!!
U12 Major-2 White: Although we lost our play-down game, we couldn’t be prouder of this team. Each and every player played their hearts out. We were winning until midway through the second period. They were skating hard, playing great positionally, and had plenty of opportunities. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough to hang on. The last couple of times playing this team we lost by 3 and 4 goals. Therefore, to have such a great game and be in it until the end is unbelievable. We look forward to finishing our league games strong.
U12 Minor-2 Blue: The team competed throughout the whole game vs the Boston Advantage, but came up short 1 goal in the end. Much to be proud of!
Read below for some stand-out games from February:
U10: The U10s had an amazing sweep on the weekend. A 3-1 win vs NE Wildcats, and a 5-3 win vs Charles River Blazers left the team with high spirits! Great play by the whole team!
U12 Red: The U12-1s played the Terriers on back-to-back days over the weekend. The Terriers are a strong team that played in the National Upper division in the fall so we knew that we would need to play our best vs them. On Saturday, the Vipers played a great all-around game. We were able to come out on top of the Terriers with a 4-3 win! Goals scored by Melania DiVirgilio, Scarlett Hollien, Jenna O’Donnell, and Rylan Blake. On Sunday, The Vipers knew that the Terriers would come out strong. With back-and-forth play, the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Goals scored by Brooke Barton (2) and Alex Manfredi.
U12 White: After being down 1-0 in the second period against the Eagles, the team kept fighting back and skating hard. All their hard work finally paid off with a tying goal with just minutes to go in the game. We are very proud of them for not giving up, playing as a team, and skating for the entire game.
U12 Blue: The girls fought for a tough 2-1 win against a closely matched Storm team. We went down 0-1 in the first period after an unlucky bounce off of a defenseman’s skate that sent the puck into our net. The team rallied around their teammate and responded with an excellent second and third period, keeping the Storm scoreless for the rest of the game. Violet Cerretani played great in the net and only let in one deflection goal, keeping out all shots for the remaining 2 periods! Our first goal was scored by Isla Doherty, on a nice breakaway after making a great move to beat the defense in the neutral zone. The winning goal was scored by Mallory McDermott, assisted by Isla Doherty.
U13 Red: Spirited affair found the 13-1 team on top 4-2 against the Crimson Pride. Total team effort, great puck movement, and active and aggressive forecheck.
U13 White: The girls faced off against the Wizards for a tough game. It was back and forth all three periods, but the Vipers held on and closed the game winning 3-1!
U14 Red: Great 5-0 shutout win for the U14-1s vs the Seacoast Spartans!
U14 White: The Wiz could not cast a late-season spell on our Vipers. Ally Morrison got us going in the first, followed by Aubrey Kelleher to go up 2-0. Lily Lovett finished it off on a wonderful bar-down snipe on a beautiful tape-to-tape pass from Kerry Friesz. The D was super all game, only rolling three. Joy Tremblay and Taylor Nickerson teamed up for the shutout. Megan Cowles played her best game of the year for our D core. The game ended with a 3-0 win, Go Vipers!!
Go Vipers!
